š Overview
Reading a policy is not the same as understanding it. Watching a training video is not the same as retaining it. For construction businesses where incorrect understanding of a safety procedure, a company policy, or a compliance requirement can have real consequences, there's a meaningful difference between documenting your standards and verifying your team actually knows them.
Structur's quiz builder, built into Company Operations, lets you create interactive quizzes directly alongside your SOPs, procedures, and training materials. After a team member reads a section, they can take a quiz to confirm their understanding. You can set a time limit, track who has been assigned, review attempt history, and share a quiz with anyone outside your company using a public link -- no Structur account required.
Quizzes turn your Company Operations content from a passive library into an active training system -- one that gives you real visibility into whether your team (or an outside candidate or vendor) has absorbed the material, not just whether they opened the page.
š Understanding Quizzes
ā” What It Does
The Quiz element in Company Operations allows you to:
Create named quizzes -- give each quiz a title, optional description, and optional time limit
Build questions with three types -- Multiple Answers, Single Answer, and Input Answer, depending on what you're testing
Add answer options and mark the correct answer -- each option can be marked correct with one click, and incorrect options are removed if needed
Add subtext to questions -- include additional context or clarification beneath a question for more complex topics
Assign quizzes to specific users -- push a quiz to individual team members so they know what to complete
Share a quiz externally -- generate a public link so anyone outside your company can take the quiz without a Structur account
Track attempts and history -- the Attempts History tab shows who has taken each quiz, including external respondents, and how they performed
Enable privacy -- restrict member users to seeing only their own quiz data while admins retain full visibility
š When to Use It
Quizzes deliver the most value when:
A team member has just completed an onboarding module and you want to confirm they retained the key information before moving on
A safety policy has been updated and you need to verify the whole team read and understood the change
You're rolling out a new procedure and want a knowledge check before team members apply it in the field
Compliance or certification requirements mean you need a documented record that employees were tested on specific material
You want to identify team members who may need additional coaching or support on a specific topic
You need to test a job candidate, new hire, or outside vendor who doesn't have a Structur login
š Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Open Company Operations and Navigate to the Right Page
Click Company Operations in the left sidebar.
Select the department where this quiz belongs -- ideally the same department as the training material it tests.
Open an existing page or click + New Page at the bottom of the left panel to create one.
Note: Placing the quiz in the same department as the related content means your team can read the SOP or policy and immediately take the quiz without navigating elsewhere.
2. Add a Quiz Element to the Page
In page editing mode, click New Element in the content area.
The New Element modal opens with nine element types. Select New Quiz.
A quick-create modal appears with two fields: Quiz Title and Quiz Description.
There is also an Enable privacy? checkbox. If you check this, member users will only see their own quiz data. Admin users always see all data regardless of this setting.
Enter the title and optional description, then click Create.
The Quiz element now appears on your page with an empty state showing "Click here to create a Quiz."
3. Create a New Quiz Inside the Element
Click + New Quiz in the top right of the Quiz element, or click the orange Click here to create a Quiz link in the empty state.
The full quiz builder modal opens. It has two tabs: General Details and Questions.
On the General Details tab, fill in:
Quiz Title -- the name of the quiz (required)
Time Limit (Minutes) -- optional. Leave blank for no time limit.
Quiz Description -- optional. Describe what the quiz covers.
Click Next Step to move to the Questions tab.
4. Add Questions
On the Questions tab, click + Add Question.
A question card appears labeled "Question 1" with a Type dropdown.
Select the question type:
Multiple Answers -- the taker selects all correct answers from a list of options. Use this when more than one answer can be correct.
Single Answer -- the taker selects one correct answer from a list of options. Use this for questions with one definitive right answer.
Input Answer -- the taker types a free-text response. Use this for open-ended questions or when recognition testing is not sufficient.
Enter the Quiz Question text (required).
Optionally enter Subtext to add clarification or context beneath the question.
For Multiple Answers and Single Answer questions, build the answer options:
Type an option in the Add new option field and click Add.
Repeat for each answer option.
Click Mark as correct under the correct answer. It will highlight to confirm the selection.
Click the red X next to any option to remove it.
Click Add in the question card header to save the question.
Note: The Quiz Question field is required (marked with a red asterisk). You cannot save a question without it.
5. Add More Questions and Save
Click + Add Question to add the next question and repeat Step 4.
Use the pencil icon on any saved question to edit it, or the trash icon to delete it.
When all questions are added, click Save Changes at the bottom of the modal.
The quiz now appears inside the Quiz element on your page, showing the quiz name, question count, time limit in minutes, and an Assignees field.
6. Assign the Quiz to Team Members
Click Assign User in the top right of the Quiz element.
Select the team members who should complete this quiz.
Assigned users will see the quiz in their Assigned To Me tab inside the element.
Note: You can also click the + button in the Assignees field on the quiz card directly to add assignees.
7. Share a Quiz Externally
Use this when you need someone without a Structur account -- a job candidate, new hire, or outside vendor -- to take a quiz.
Click the share icon next to Start Quiz on the quiz card.
The Share Quiz panel opens.
Toggle External Access on. A public link appears in the format
https://app.structur.com/q/[token].Click the copy icon next to the link, then send it to anyone outside your company.
Note: The Embed Quiz toggle also appears in this panel but isn't functional yet. External Access is currently the only working way to share a quiz outside Structur.
What the recipient sees: The link opens directly to the quiz with no login required. They see the quiz title, a countdown timer (if you set one), a progress indicator (e.g. "1/2"), and one question at a time. They answer and click Next Question to advance, or Submit on the final question.
From the second question onward, a Back button appears at the bottom left of the card, letting the recipient step back one question at a time without losing any answers they've already entered. Back is hidden on the first question. After submitting, the recipient sees a confirmation screen showing their score immediately.
Note: Treat an external quiz link like a public form. Anyone with the link can take the quiz without an account, so only share it with the people you intend to test, and toggle External Access off when you're done with it.
8. Track Attempts
Click the Attempts History tab on the Quiz element to see a record of all quiz attempts.
External submissions appear in the same list, labeled Submitted by: External respondent, alongside the submission date, score, and number of questions answered correctly.
Use this data to identify team members -- or external takers -- who may need additional support or follow-up.
ā Best Practices
Place the quiz in the same department as the training material -- a team member should read the SOP and immediately take the quiz without navigating elsewhere. Proximity reinforces the connection between reading and retention.
Write clear, unambiguous questions -- every question should have one clearly correct answer. Poorly worded questions test reading comprehension of the question itself, not the underlying knowledge.
Use Subtext to add context for complex questions -- if a question requires background knowledge or refers to a specific policy section, the Subtext field lets you include that context without bloating the question itself.
Set a time limit for compliance and certification quizzes -- a time limit adds accountability and ensures team members engage with the material thoughtfully rather than rushing through.
Assign quizzes rather than leaving them open -- using the Assign User feature gives team members a direct nudge to complete the quiz and gives you a clear record of who has been assigned versus who has completed it.
Build quizzes on the same page as the content they test -- a quiz is most effective immediately after the material it covers. Put the Rich Text or SOP content first, then add the quiz element at the bottom of the same page.
Check Attempts History after rolling out a new policy -- don't assume completion means understanding. Review attempt data to catch team members who may have struggled and follow up directly.
Turn off External Access when you're done -- since anyone with the link can take an externally shared quiz without an account, disable it once the people you intended to test have completed it.
ā Common Questions
Q: Where do Quiz elements live in Structur?
A: Quiz elements are created and stored inside Company Operations, on pages within the department structure you've set up. They live alongside other elements on the same page -- Rich Text, Checklists, Documents, and Scorecards can all appear on the same page as a Quiz element.
Q: What question types are available?
A: Three types: Multiple Answers (select all correct answers from a list), Single Answer (select one correct answer from a list), and Input Answer (typed free-text response). Choose the type that best matches what you're testing for each individual question.
Q: Can I set a time limit on a quiz?
A: Yes. The Time Limit (Minutes) field on the General Details tab sets a timer for the quiz. Leave it blank if you don't want a time limit.
Q: What does the Enable Privacy option do?
A: When enabled, member users can only see their own quiz data and attempt history. Admin users always see all users' data regardless of this setting. Enable privacy when you want to prevent team members from comparing their results with each other.
Q: Can I see who has taken a quiz and how they did?
A: Yes. Click the Attempts History tab on the Quiz element to see a full record of quiz attempts across your team, including any external respondents.
Q: Can I assign a quiz to specific people?
A: Yes. Click Assign User in the top right of the Quiz element to assign the quiz to specific team members. Assigned users see it in their Assigned To Me tab.
Q: Can one Quiz element hold multiple quizzes?
A: Yes. Each Quiz element on a page can contain multiple quizzes. Click + New Quiz to add another quiz to the same element. This is useful if you want to offer a retake version or break a long topic into shorter quiz segments.
Q: Can I share a quiz with someone who doesn't have a Structur account?
A: Yes. Click the share icon next to Start Quiz on the quiz card and toggle External Access on. This generates a public link anyone can use to take the quiz without logging in.
Q: Can I embed a quiz on my own website?
A: There's an Embed Quiz toggle in the Share Quiz panel, but it isn't functional yet. Currently, External Access is the only working way to share a quiz outside Structur.
Q: Can someone taking a shared quiz go back and change an earlier answer?
A: Yes. From the second question onward, a Back button appears at the bottom left that steps back one question at a time without erasing any answers. It's hidden on the first question since there's nowhere to go back to.
Q: Does an external respondent see their score?
A: Yes. After they submit, they immediately see a confirmation screen with their score.
Q: How do I know if a quiz attempt came from someone outside my company?
A: Check the Attempts History tab. External submissions are labeled "Submitted by: External respondent," distinguishing them from attempts by your own team members.
