Org Chart

Covers building your org chart, adding people, customizing cards, and exporting.

Written by Support

šŸ“‹ Overview

A clear org chart tells everyone on your team where they fit, who they report to, and how the company is structured. Without one, new hires have to ask around to figure out who owns what, and leadership has no consistent picture to share with clients or partners. The Org Chart in Structur gives you a visual, editable map of your company structure that lives inside the same platform your team uses every day.

You build the chart by adding people with their name, title, department, and contact details. Cards are color-coded so you can visually distinguish roles or departments at a glance. When the chart is ready, you can download it as a PNG to share externally or print for the office.

The Org Chart lives in Company Operations and is visible to everyone on your team. Only users with edit permissions see the Edit Org Chart button.

šŸ” Understanding the Org Chart

⚔ What It Does

The Org Chart allows you and your team to:

  • Build a visual hierarchy showing how your company is organized by role and reporting structure

  • Add people with full name, job title, department, email, phone, and a customizable card color

  • Color-code cards to visually group roles, departments, or seniority levels

  • Search the chart to find a specific person by name

  • Zoom and navigate the chart using zoom controls and the mini-map

  • Export as PNG to share the chart externally or print it

  • Download a copy directly from the view mode page

šŸ“… When to Use It

The Org Chart is most valuable when you want to:

  • Give new hires a clear picture of the company structure on day one

  • Share your team structure with a client, partner, or subcontractor

  • Keep leadership aligned on how the company is organized as it grows

  • Have a single, always-current version of your org chart instead of an outdated PDF

šŸ“ Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Open the Org Chart

  1. Click Company Operations in the left sidebar

  2. Click Org Chart in the top navigation bar

The Org Chart opens in view mode showing your current chart. If the chart is empty, it shows a blank canvas. From view mode, you can Download the chart or click Edit Org Chart to make changes.

2. Add People to the Chart

  1. Click Edit Org Chart to enter edit mode

  2. Click + New Person in the top right

  3. The Add Person panel slides out on the right. Fill in: Full Name, Job Title, Department (select from the dropdown), Email, Phone, and Card Color (choose from the color picker to set the color of this person's card on the chart)

  4. Click Save

The new person appears as a card on the chart canvas. Repeat for each team member you want to add.

Note: The chart does not automatically connect cards to each other. After adding people, arrange and connect them to reflect your reporting structure by dragging cards into position.

3. Navigate and Organize the Chart

In edit mode, use the following tools to navigate and arrange the chart: Search bar (type a name to find and highlight a specific person on the chart), Zoom controls (use the minus and plus buttons or type a percentage to zoom in and out), Fit View (click Fit View in the top right to zoom the chart to fit the full canvas on screen), Mini-map (the thumbnail in the bottom left shows your position in the full chart -- drag it to navigate large charts quickly), and People count (the top right shows the total number of people currently on the chart).

Drag cards to reposition them. Arrange reporting relationships visually by placing direct reports below their manager.

4. Export or Download the Chart

From edit mode: Click Export PNG in the top right to download the chart as a PNG image.

From view mode: Click Download in the top right to download the chart.

⭐ Best Practices

  • Use card colors consistently -- assign a color per department or role type so the chart is readable at a glance without needing to read every title.

  • Add job titles accurately -- the title shows directly on the card and is the first thing people read, so keep it specific and consistent with how you refer to roles internally.

  • Keep it current -- update the chart when people join, leave, or change roles so it stays useful rather than becoming an outdated reference.

  • Use Fit View after building -- once you've added and arranged all your cards, click Fit View to see the whole structure in one clean view before exporting.

  • Export for new hire packets -- a PNG of your org chart is a simple addition to onboarding materials and saves new hires the guesswork of figuring out who's who.

ā“ Common Questions

Q: Where is the Org Chart in Structur?

A: Click Company Operations in the left sidebar, then click Org Chart in the top navigation bar.

Q: Who can edit the Org Chart?

A: Users with edit permissions see the Edit Org Chart button. Team members without edit access see the chart in read-only view mode.

Q: Can I connect cards to show reporting relationships?

A: You can arrange cards visually to show hierarchy by positioning direct reports below their manager. Currently, the chart uses visual positioning rather than drawn connecting lines. Connecting lines are on the Structur roadmap.

Q: Can I add someone to the Org Chart who isn't in Structur as a user?

A: Yes. The Add Person panel lets you enter any name, title, department, and contact details -- the person doesn't need to be a Structur user to appear on the chart.

Q: How do I export the Org Chart to share it?

A: Click Export PNG in edit mode or Download in view mode to save the chart as a PNG image file.

Q: Can I search for a specific person on the chart?

A: Yes. In edit mode, use the search bar at the top left to search by name. The chart will highlight the matching card.
